An Argument concerning Michelle Obama's Belt

As I was driving home from class today, I heard a fashion commentator making the argument that Michelle Obama's belt from J. Crew, worn over her coat at the Inaugeration, signalled that she is down to earth and "just like the rest of us." What do you think? Agree? Was she hoping to send that message to audiences?

  1. i tend to disagree with this statement. just because one wears a belt over their coat doesnt mean or signify that they are hip or down to earth. she was not hoping to send a message to the audience because there was not a message behind the belt it was all for show and fashion. a belt doesnt represent that one is down to earth like the rest of us. a belt is a belt and represents the use to hold something.

  2. I agree with that, because she's the first lady and she can afford whatever belt she wants, yet she picked out a J Crew one. However, I feel like without more details, we can't argue it any further because for all we know, she could have bought it just because she liked the belt, or because it matched it. Whatever the case may be, we can't argue any further, until more detail is presented.
